Hello !
I hope this message finds you well and that May is bringing you new opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally.
Over the years, I’ve had many conversations with entrepreneurs and business people who
feel uncertain about how to truly connect with others at business networking events or even in one-to-one conversations. If you’ve ever walked into a room full of strangers and wondered, “How do I start a meaningful conversation?”—you’re not alone.
For those who are new to my emails, my name is Linda Thurwanger. As an Executive & Personal Coach, I specialize in helping individuals navigate life’s transitions—whether that’s overcoming a setback, reinventing yourself after a major change, or simply wanting to build stronger, more authentic relationships at work and beyond.
Making Real Connections, Not Just Contacts
When it comes
to networking, the most valuable connections often begin with genuine curiosity and listening. Rather than focusing on what you can gain, approach each conversation as an opportunity to learn about the other person. People remember those who make them feel heard and valued. Here are a few strategies that have helped both myself and my clients:
- Ask open-ended questions: “What inspired you to get into your field?” or “What’s something
you’re working on that excites you?”
- Listen actively: Give your full attention, and respond thoughtfully. It’s amazing how much trust you can build by simply being present.
- Share your story: Be open about your own journey, including the challenges you’ve faced. Authenticity invites connection.
- Follow up: After meeting someone, send a short note or message reflecting on your conversation. This small gesture can turn a
brief encounter into a lasting relationship.
These skills are not only helpful at large networking events—they’re just as powerful in one-to-one conversations, whether you’re meeting a colleague for coffee or introducing yourself to someone new at a workshop.
