Happy New Year, !
I am not a big fan of New Year's Resolutions. Most of the resolutions people make are doomed from the beginning. Just look at the gym near your home. Beginning January 2, the parking
lot is so packed, it's difficult to find a place to park your car. Fast forward to March... there are much fewer cars in the lot and you no longer have to wait to use the workout equipment.
Instead of a resolution to lose weight, spend less, or finally start that business you've been dreaming about, set an intention to do the one thing that will help you in all areas of your life. What is that one thing?
Slow Down
That's right...slow down. Slow down your thinking, slow down your reactions, and slow down your need to do or have more. Slow down in every area of your life.
It is counterintuitive, but when we slow our pace, we can actually get more done in less time. The
number of errors will also go down and we will have less anxiety about life in general. There are an abundance of benefits to slowing down.
If you don't believe me, do your own experiment. Slow down the way you approach your tasks or projects at work or at home. Try it for a week and then hit reply and let me know what you noticed happening.
When a family
member or friend needs your help, slow down enough to really listen to what they are saying. Pay attention to the tone of their voice and their body language. Don't jump in with a solution, but instead ask them to tell you what would be most helpful to them. Again, hit reply and let me know if you noticed a difference in your relationship with that person.
I am as guilty as the next person of running around trying to
do too much at one time and not doing any of it as well as I could. All that rushing around is bad for our psyche and our digestive system. Just like you, sometimes I fret over something that happened in the past or have anxiety over what might happen in the future.
When I realize that my thoughts are focused on the past or the future, slowing down helps me to come back to now. I remind myself that there
is nothing I can do to change the past. What I can do, is to be fully present in today and do the best I can in each moment as I am in it. What I do today creates my future.
Another bonus to slowing down, is the feeling of peace that comes with living a more intentional and slower paced life. I would love to hear about the benefits you have noticed when you slow yourself down.
